Range Advantage
A situation where one player's overall range is stronger than their opponent's on a given board, guiding betting frequency and sizing decisions.
What Is Range Advantage?
Range advantage exists when one player's overall set of possible hands is stronger than their opponent's on a particular board texture. This does not mean the player with range advantage always holds the best hand. It means that across all hands in their range, they have a higher concentration of strong holdings relative to the board. Range advantage is a cornerstone of GTO strategy because it dictates who should be betting, how often, and at what size.
How Range Advantage Is Determined
Range advantage is a function of preflop ranges interacting with Board Texture. The preflop aggressor typically has range advantage on high-card boards like A-K-7 or K-Q-3, because their opening range contains more premium broadway hands. The preflop caller may have range advantage on low, connected boards like 7-6-5, where their wider range includes more two-pair and straight combinations.
Range advantage is distinct from Nut Advantage, which refers to who holds more of the absolute best hands. The preflop raiser may have overall range advantage on a K-9-4 board, but the caller can hold nut advantage if they are more likely to have sets of nines and fours.
Practical Example
You open from the hijack and the big blind calls. The flop comes A-J-3 rainbow. Your range is loaded with strong ace-x combinations, pocket jacks, and AK/AQ. The big blind's calling range contains fewer strong aces because they would have 3-bet AK and AQ. Your significant range advantage justifies a high-frequency c-bet at a small sizing of 25-33% pot.
Why Range Advantage Matters for GTO Play
Modern solver outputs are largely driven by range advantage. When you have it, solvers recommend betting at high frequency with a small size. When you lack it, solvers recommend checking more often and using larger sizes selectively.
