Board Texture

The characteristics of community cards -- rank, suit, and connectivity -- that determine which player has range advantage and how to bet optimally.

What Is Board Texture?

Board texture refers to the characteristics of the community cards -- their ranks, suits, and connectivity -- and how those characteristics interact with each player's Range Advantage. Board texture is arguably the single most important factor in postflop strategy because it dictates who can bet, how often, and at what size.

The Four Board Texture Categories

Boards are classified along two axes: wet vs. dry and static vs. dynamic.

  • Dry boards (e.g., K♠7♦2♣): Few draws, minimal connectivity. Favors the preflop raiser with high-frequency, small-size Continuation Bets.
  • Wet boards (e.g., 9♥8♥7♦): Many draws, strong connectivity. Equity shifts dramatically on future streets. Favors larger bet sizes at lower frequency.
  • Static boards (e.g., A♠A♦7♣): Turn and river rarely change relative hand strengths. The flop leader usually stays ahead.
  • Dynamic boards (e.g., J♥T♥9♣): Many turn cards dramatically shift equities. The current best hand is vulnerable to being overtaken.

Board Texture and Betting Strategy

Board texture drives three critical strategic decisions:

  • Bet frequency: The more the board favors your range, the more often you can bet. On A-K-8 rainbow, the raiser can c-bet 80%+ of hands. On 7-6-5 two-tone, they should check most of the time.
  • Bet sizing: Dry, static boards support small bets (25-33% pot). Wet, dynamic boards support larger bets (66-100% pot) to charge draws.
  • Check-raise frequency: Boards that favor the caller's range produce higher check-raise frequencies from the out-of-position player.

A Practical Example

You open from the button and the big blind calls. The flop comes Q♥7♥3♦. This is a moderately dry board with one flush draw. You have significant range advantage because your range contains more queens, overpairs, and strong hands. A 33% pot c-bet at high frequency is optimal -- bet often but cheaply, pressuring your opponent's wide defending range.
