What Is Geometric Bet Sizing?

Geometric bet sizing is a strategy where you bet the same percentage of the pot on each remaining street, designed so that your final bet puts you exactly all-in on the river. This creates a smooth escalation of commitment that is mathematically optimal in many situations.

The Formula

To find the geometric bet fraction f across n streets:

f = ((Stack + Pot) / Pot)1/n - 1) / 2

Where Stack is the effective remaining stack and Pot is the current pot size.

Why Use Geometric Sizing?

  • Maximizes value: By getting all-in exactly on the river, you don't leave money behind.
  • Simplifies decisions: Bet the same percentage each street — no need to plan different sizes.
  • Polarized ranges: Geometric sizing works best with polarized ranges (strong value hands and bluffs).

Stack-to-Pot Ratio (SPR)

The SPR (effective stack divided by pot) determines which geometric size to use. A high SPR means you need to bet larger fractions each street; a low SPR allows for smaller, more controlled bets. Generally, SPR below 4 means you can comfortably get all-in with standard sizing over the remaining streets.
