How to Set Up a Poker Tournament Blind Structure

A well-designed blind structure is essential for a fun and competitive home tournament. The blinds should increase at regular intervals to ensure the tournament progresses toward a conclusion while giving players enough time to play meaningful poker.

Choosing Level Duration

  • Turbo (10 minutes): Fast-paced, great for quick tournaments with 4-6 players. Expect a 2-3 hour tournament.
  • Standard (15 minutes): The most popular choice for home games. Balanced action and strategy for 6-9 players.
  • Deep Stack (20 minutes): More room for postflop play and strategic depth. Best for experienced players. Allow 4-6 hours.

Breaks

Schedule 10-minute breaks every 4-5 levels. Breaks help players recharge, handle chip color-ups, and keep the atmosphere relaxed. For tournaments longer than 3 hours, consider a longer dinner break.

Starting Stacks

A common starting stack is 100-200 big blinds. For a turbo structure starting at 25/50, give players 5,000-10,000 in chips. For deeper structures, 10,000-20,000 chips provide more play at the early levels.
