Semi-Bluff

A bet or raise with a drawing hand that is not currently the best but has significant potential to improve, combining fold equity with draw equity.

What Is a Semi-Bluff?

A semi-bluff is a bet or raise with a hand that is likely not the best at the moment but has significant potential to improve. Unlike a pure Bluff where your hand has virtually no chance of winning at showdown, a semi-bluff combines two sources of profit: Fold Equity from making your opponent fold immediately, and Equity from improving to the best hand when called.

Why Semi-Bluffs Are So Powerful

Semi-bluffs give you multiple ways to win the pot. If you bet a flush draw on the flop and your opponent folds 40% of the time, you pick up the pot uncontested nearly half the time. When called, you still have roughly 35% equity to make the best hand by the river. This combination of fold equity plus draw equity often makes semi-bluffs more profitable than betting with a made hand or bluffing with air.

Ideal Semi-Bluff Candidates

The best semi-bluffing hands combine draw equity with good blockers:

  • Flush draws with overcards: A-K of spades on a 9-7-3 two-spade board gives you roughly 15 outs
  • Open-ended straight draws: J-10 on a 9-8-2 board provides 8 clean outs
  • Combo draws: A flush draw plus a straight draw can have over 50% equity against top pair

Practical Example

You hold 10-9 of diamonds and call a hijack raise. The flop comes Q-8-3 with two diamonds. You have a flush draw plus a gutshot straight draw. Your opponent c-bets 50% pot. Rather than calling, you raise as a semi-bluff. Your opponent must fold many marginal hands. If called, you still have roughly 40% equity to improve.

Semi-Bluffs in GTO Strategy

GTO solvers construct flop raising ranges largely from semi-bluffs. In a solver's check-raise range, the majority of hands are draws rather than made hands, because semi-bluffs balance the range by adding aggression without sacrificing equity. Postflop+ lets you practice these spots against a GTO opponent, and Range Construction Postflop: From C-Bet to River breaks down how solvers build raising ranges around semi-bluffs.
