Pot Odds

The ratio of the current pot to the cost of a call, expressed as a percentage, used to determine whether calling a bet is mathematically profitable.

What Are Pot Odds?

Pot odds represent the ratio between the current size of the pot and the cost of a call you are facing. They tell you the price the pot is offering and, when compared against your Equity, determine whether calling a bet is mathematically profitable. Pot odds are the single most important mathematical concept in poker decision-making.

Calculating Pot Odds

The formula is straightforward:

Pot Odds (%) = Call Amount / (Pot + Opponent's Bet + Call Amount)

Example: The pot is $80, your opponent bets $40, and you must call $40. Your pot odds are $40 / ($80 + $40 + $40) = 25%. You need at least 25% equity to make a profitable call.

Pot Odds by Common Bet Sizes

Memorize these benchmarks for instant in-game application:

  • 25% pot bet: You need 20% equity to call
  • 33% pot bet: You need 25% equity to call (one quarter of the time)
  • 50% pot bet: You need 25% equity to call
  • 67% pot bet: You need 29% equity to call
  • 75% pot bet: You need 30% equity to call
  • 100% pot bet: You need 33% equity to call (one third of the time)
  • 150% pot bet: You need 37.5% equity to call

The Pot Odds Calculator computes exact pot odds for any scenario, saving mental energy during complex multi-street decisions.

Pot Odds vs. Implied Odds

Pot odds consider only the money currently in the pot. Implied Odds extend the calculation by estimating future money you can win on later streets if you hit your draw. Both concepts work together: pot odds set the minimum threshold, and implied odds can justify calls that fall slightly short.

Practical Example

You hold Jh Th on a board of 9s 8c 2d. Your opponent bets $60 into a $100 pot. Your pot odds are $60 / $220 = 27.3%. You have an open-ended straight draw with eight outs, giving you roughly 31.5% equity with two cards to come. Since your equity (31.5%) exceeds your pot odds (27.3%), calling is mathematically correct.
