Bluff Catching

Calling a bet with a hand that only beats bluffs, relying on the opponent's bluffing frequency to make the call profitable.

What Is Bluff Catching?

Bluff catching is calling a bet -- typically on the river -- with a hand that can only beat bluffs. Your hand is too weak to beat your opponent's value range, but you believe they are bluffing often enough that calling is more profitable than folding. It is one of poker's most mentally demanding skills because it requires calling with a hand you know loses to any genuine holding.

When Should You Bluff Catch?

A bluff catch is correct when pot odds justify it relative to your opponent's bluffing frequency:

  • Calculate the pot odds you are being offered
  • Estimate how often your opponent is bluffing in this specific spot
  • If their bluff frequency exceeds your required calling frequency, call

For a pot-sized river bet, you need your opponent bluffing at least 33% of the time. For a half-pot bet, at least 25% of the time.

Choosing the Best Bluff Catchers

The ideal bluff catcher has three properties:

  • Blocks opponent's value range: Holding cards that reduce the number of strong hands they can have makes it more likely they are bluffing
  • Does not block opponent's bluffs: You want them to have as many bluff combinations as possible
  • Has some showdown value: Folding would waste whatever equity the hand has

Bluff Catching and MDF

MDF provides the theoretical baseline for bluff catching frequency. Against a pot-sized bet, MDF says you must continue with 50% of your range -- some of that as raises with strong hands, the rest as bluff catches. Fold more than MDF allows and your opponent profits by bluffing any two cards. Call too often and they exploit you by only value betting. The MDF Calculator computes exact calling frequencies for any bet size.

A River Bluff Catching Example

You hold A♥9♥ on a K♠T♦6♣3♥2♦ board. Your opponent fires a pot-sized river bet. Your hand beats nothing in their value range, but the A♥ blocks AK combinations -- making top pair less likely and bluffs more likely. Combined with the Polarized Range nature of their bet, calling is often correct here.
